ZHU Xiao-Mei was born in Shanghai and was introduced to music by her mother, beginning her apprenticeship at a very early age and appearing on radio and television by the time she was eight. Two years later she enrolled at the Beijing Conservatory only to have her studies disrupted by the Cultural Revolution. By the mids she had settled in France, and it was here that her career belatedly took off without any support from the media and in the face of all of the fashions and trends of the time.
